The Mardi Gras for a Cause committee is thrilled to report that the twelfth annual Mardi Gras for a Cause celebration, held on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 13, was successful beyond its expectations! The event raised nearly $23,000 for Backpack Snack Attack, an outreach program of the Warwick Reformed Church that provides food on the weekends to nearly 300 hungry children during the school year within the Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Warwick public school districts.

“It really does take a village to organize, implement and support an initiative like Mardi Gras for a Cause,” said Mardi Gras for a Cause Co-Chairman, John E. Desibia.

Jenna Price, Director of Backpack Snack Attack and Co-Chairman of Mardi Gras for a Cause, said “I was so happy we didn’t have to reschedule due to the snowstorm and that the community came out to support Backpack Snack Attack. It was such a great night!”

Special shout outs of heartfelt thanks are necessary to acknowledge all 11 acts and bands involving 48 performers who donated their time, sound man extraordinaire Will Orosz, 10 amazing venues and their staff, and to the 20 host volunteers. We couldn’t do this without you! You are all rock stars!

Our 12th Annual Mardi Gras for a Cause will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.

Mardi Gras for a Cause was first dreamed up by a group of musicians from Warwick, NY who wanted to celebrate their passion for music and their community. Living in a town that was so supportive of the arts, it didn’t take long for a whole committee of musicians and business owners to come together and turn that dream into a reality. The inaugural event in 2013 transformed what would have been an ordinary Tuesday night into an evening where people of all ages came together and had unique and memorable experiences while supporting a wonderful community organization, Backpack Snack Attack. Participating Restaurants and Pubs will offer Mardi Gras themed food and drink specials and all locations will have live music. Guests are encouraged to visit several locations during the course of the evening. Bangles, Beads, Prizes, and a lot of fun. We are bringing the New Orleans Fat Tuesday Celebration to the Villages of Warwick and Florida NY!!

Backpack Snack Attack is an outreach program of the Warwick Reformed Church that feeds over 250 children in the Town of Warwick. The program provides food for hungry school children to eat at home on the weekends during the school year, when school meals are not available. The school selects the children in need. Backpack Snack Attack then provides the backpacks and individually sized, ready to eat (including microwavable), kid friendly food items for the children and their siblings every weekend. During the summer, Backpack Snack Attack distributes Staples gift cards to assist with purchasing school supplies for the next year. NOTE: The Backpack Snack Attack program is fueled by volunteers and supported by fundraising, donations, and grants.

Please help Backpack continue to feed the hungry children in our community!

Thank you in advance for the support!
